Do you have basic lab skills? Are you interested in assisting in research to protect marine animals? Help our Wildlife and Ocean Health Program in the Anderson Cabot Center for Ocean Life analyze baleen and fecal samples to investigate hormone patterns related to reproduction, stress, and nutrition in a diversity of difficult-to-study marine species!

Time commitment:

One half-day (9am-1pm) each week for a period of at least 6 months.

Responsibilities:

  • Sample Processing: Prepare, weigh, and process baleen, fecal, and other wildlife samples for hormone analysis.
  • Data Entry and Record-Keeping: Maintain accurate, organized records of sample data, experimental procedures, and results.
  • Laboratory Equipment Operation: Learn to operate laboratory instruments used in hormone analysis, ensuring accurate maintenance, calibration, and troubleshooting.
  • Laboratory Maintenance: Maintain a clean, organized, and functional laboratory environment, adhering to safety and health protocols.
  • Archive Management: Assist in handling and coordinating long-term archive samples for future analysis and reference.
  • Cross-Program Exposure: Participate in team meetings and gain exposure to a variety of projects within the WOH program, focusing on marine wildlife health and reproduction.

Qualifications:

  • Strong Attention to Detail: Ability to handle and process samples accurately, ensuring high-quality results.
  • Basic Laboratory Skills: Familiarity with or ability to learn standard laboratory techniques, including sample preparation, data entry, and record-keeping.
  • Scientific Curiosity: Interest in marine wildlife biology, endocrinology, and conservation, with a desire to contribute to meaningful scientific research.
  • Communication Skills: Ability to effectively communicate with team members, including the preparation of reports and participation in team discussions.
  • Organizational Skills: Ability to maintain an organized laboratory environment and manage sample archives for easy retrieval.
  • Ability to Follow Protocols: Dedication to following laboratory protocols, safety guidelines, and ethical standards in all research activities.
  • Basic Data Management: Comfort with data entry and organizing records in digital or paper formats.
  • Laboratory Instrument Proficiency: Willingness and ability to learn how to operate, maintain, and calibrate laboratory instruments used in hormone analysis.
  • Interest in Marine Conservation: A strong passion for marine wildlife conservation and the application of science to inform conservation strategies.
