Interested in taking on additional responsibilities but want to maintain a flexible, episodic volunteer schedule? Various aquarium departments and partner organizations are in need of skilled, dedicated volunteers for a number of roles!
The live blue Service Corps offers you the chance to apply to positions that are similar to the Classic Corps but without the weekly, 6-month commitment. Just like the Classic Corps, however, interested individuals must apply, interview, and attend training to qualify for many of these positions.
Skills Service Corps Volunteer Positions:
Maintain quality control and preparing food for animals ranging from tiny gobies to large stingrays animals in our quarantine and holding facility. Mornings will be spent cutting and weighing fish, shellfish, vegetation and other foods. Additionally, this position includes cleaning the food prep space and equipment.
Engage with visitors in one-on-one conversation about our sea lions. Volunteers in this role utilize our provided training materials and animal artifacts to answer questions, provide fun facts, and support our Marine Mammal Center presentations.
Provide a watchful eye on the penguins and their habitats while engaging with visitors about the animals. Monitors may aid penguin trainers by conducting specific observations of animals and their habitats, monitoring visitor behavior, gathering data, and recordkeeping.
Help rehabilitate endangered sea turtles. These turtles come to us with extreme hypothermia, severe dehydration, pneumonia, and often shell or bone fractures. By helping to aiding these turtles they will recieve proper treatment and will help ensure them a healthy recovery and get released back into the ocean.
Represent the New England Aquarium by engaging visitors of all ages and backgrounds in activities focused on our youngest audiences through both facilitated and unfacilitated activities as well as one-on-one conversations with visitors using a variety of biofacts (animal artifacts). Don't know a lot about the Aquarium or how to talk to visitors? Don't worry! We provide training and mentorship to prepare volunteers with all the fun facts, information, and teaching tips needed to become a highly engaging Exploration Station volunteer.
What is living blue?
Our mission is to Protect the Blue Planet by actively engaging in research and conservation, as well as by fostering future aquatic stewards. But to protect the 70% of the planet covered in water, we must recognize that our actions on land have a significant impact on our aquatic ecosystems.
