Exploration Station Volunteer
Exploration Station Educators are ambassadors, representing the New England Aquarium by engaging visitors of all ages and backgrounds in activities focused on our youngest audiences through both facilitated and unfacilitated activities as well as one-on-one conversations with visitors using a variety of biofacts (animal artifacts). Don't know a lot about the Aquarium or how to talk to visitors? Don't worry! We provide training and mentorship to prepare volunteers with all the fun facts, information, and teaching tips needed to become a highly engaging Exploration Station volunteer.
Required Commitment & Onboarding:

After passing a screening process and interview with the Office of Volunteer Programs and Internships:

Attend one of the following in-person training classes from 9:30am to 1:30pm:

Saturday, April 26, 2025

Complete at least six 3-hour shifts by September 2025. Three shifts are available:

9:00am-12:00pm
-
12:00pm - 3:00pm
-
1:00 pm - 4:00 pm

Responsibilities:
-
This position will be stationed at the Exploration Station, our exhibit designed with young learners (ages 2-7 years) and their caretakers in mind. The volunteer will facilitate activities (e.g., storytime, art projects, learning games), engage in free play, and ensure the safety of guests. Volunteers may also be involved in testing out new program ideas under the guidance of a Senior Educator.

As part of their shift, the volunteer will attend a daily meeting (Update) with other Conservation Learning volunteers to hear about Aquarium happenings, scheduling changes for the day, and have continued learning opportunities.

Each shift will include time at the Exploration Station, the “Update” meeting, and a short break.

Training is required and available free of charge to volunteers and includes topics such as basic Aquarium information, visitor/animal safety, public speaking skills, and communicating effectively with different age groups.
Qualifications:

Enthusiasm and interest for meeting and working with a high volume of aquarium visitors daily
-
Interest in helping our young visitors learn and explore aquatic habitats and animals.

Willingness to learn about aquatic habitats, Aquarium exhibits, and programs.
-
Experience with, or interest in learning about, childhood development.
-
Ability to communicate effectively in noisy and crowded conditions

Be able to stand or sit for long periods of time
-
Comfortable moving up and down stairs throughout the day

Age requirements: at least 18 years old
