Sea Turtle Necropsy and Husbandry Intern

Time Commitment:

12 weeks. At least 3 full days (8am-6pm)

Summary:

Our rescuers rehabilitate endangered sea turtles. In the past decade alone, our rescuers have treated and released thousands of Kemp’s ridley sea turtles as well as many green and loggerhead sea turtles. These numbers are especially significant considering the Kemp’s ridley is the most endangered sea turtle in the world. 

The New England Aquarium is currently seeking a Sea Turtle Necropsy and Husbandry Intern to assist in the daily operations of the Marine Animal Rescue and Rehabilitation Department. The position’s primary focus will be necropsy, performing tasks that relate to post-mortem exams of stranded sea turtles. The candidate will also participate in husbandry tasks when necropsies are not needed. The ideal candidate will be highly-motivated, able to work independently, meticulous about detail, and have an interest in marine animal pathology. This position will report to the Necropsy Specialist and will work with the larger Rescue and Rehab team of volunteers and staff. 

Responsibilities

  • Perform post-mortem exams of stranded sea turtles, including tissue sample collection, report writing, and photography
  • Data entry and database management duties
  • Frozen and fixed tissue sample inventory and management
  • Follow standard quarantine protocols and maintenance of laboratory equipment
  • Food preparation and feeding of sea turtles
  • Restraining sea turtles for treatments and injections
  • Monitoring behavior and health of sea turtles
  • Maintaining records including water quality, daily food intake, swim charts and treatment sheets
  • A significant amount of cleaning is required in order to maintain the hospital environment

Qualifications

  • Must be at least 18 years of age
  • Must be able to handle the sight of blood and acrid smells
  • Must be able to perform significant cleaning tasks daily
  • This position requires physical tasks; Applicant must be able to lift and carry 50 lbs
  • Must have strong attention to detail
  • Must be proficient in a data management program (i.e. excel, access or similar)
  • Must be able to work independently as well as with a team
  • Strong organizational skills are a must
  • Attend seven intern events with the Volunteer Programs and Internships Office
