Community Engagement Intern

Time Commitment: 12–16 weeks. 16–24 hours per week. Schedule may include occasional weekend hours (one Sunday per month) based on programming needs.

Summary:

The Community Engagement Intern supports the planning and execution of initiatives that activate the Aquarium’s waterfront spaces and strengthen connections with surrounding communities. This role focuses primarily on social resilience efforts, including public programming, community events, and outreach, while contributing to broader departmental goals that bridge community engagement and environmental resilience.

Organizational Description:

The New England Aquarium is a catalyst for global change through public engagement and education, commitment to marine animal conservation, innovative scientific research, and effective advocacy for a vital and vibrant ocean.

Departmental Description:

The Community Engagement team works to build meaningful relationships between the Aquarium and diverse communities through programming, partnerships, and public activation of waterfront spaces. The department advances both social resilience, through community-building initiatives and events, and physical resilience by supporting broader efforts related to coastal resilience.

Duties/responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

· Assist with outreach, logistics, and execution of waterfront programming (e.g., waterfront walks, dock programming, etc.)

· Support ideation and evaluation of primary Community Engagement programmatic efforts (e.g., Boston Family Days)

· Research and track public community or civic organization events in Boston neighborhoods

· Take notes during meetings; type documents and spreadsheets, drafts, and reports; sort and manage files

· Answer phone inquiries, direct calls, and provide basic administrative support, including at Community Engagement events.

Skills/Qualifications:

· Proficient computer skills, including Microsoft Office Suite (Word, PowerPoint, and Excel)

· Excellent written and verbal communication skills

· Experience or interest in community relations and/or environmental conservation a plus

· Energetic and eager to tackle new projects and ideas

· Ability to work independently
