Frequently Asked Questions

The Aquarium would not be able to operate without the help of its volunteers and interns. Volunteering has great rewards, but it's also a big commitment and there are a lot of opportunities to chose from. Find out which program is right for you by checking out the FAQ pages for each program.

How do I get started?

To start the process of applying to be a volunteer or intern, make sure you create an account. After registering and logging in, you'll see a new menu option, "Submit an Application". Already have an account? Just Log In and select the "Submit an Application" menu option.

Where can I find my online profile?

Once you log in, click the "My Account" tab. From there, you can update your personal information, add skills and certifications to your profile, self-report volunteer service hours, and see any searches you've saved. You can also see the "Upcoming Opportunities" you are scheduled to attend and sign up for more projects in the live blue Service Calendar.

I see I'm scheduled for a date I can't work. Should I click "Remove Me"?

If you are in the Classic Corp, you should only click "Remove Me" AFTER you alert your supervisor of your absence and receive permission to take the day off.

If you are signed up for a live blue Service Corp" project and find that you cannot attend, you should click "Remove Me" as soon as possible. This will free-up your spot so that someone from the waitlist can take your place. As a courtesy, you should also alert the project's Service Leader so they know not to expect you at the meeting site.

What are "Self-Reported Hours"?

"Self-Reporting Your Volunteer Service" is a new feature you can use to log hours in the event that you forget to sign in for a shift, or if you volunteer for the Aquarium outside of your normally scheduled shift. Select your department under "Organization Name" and write your position under "Opportunity Name." The volunteer office will need to approve your hours before they appear on your profile.

I'm not receiving any confirmation e-mails after I sign up for projects or "Express Interest" in Service Corps positions. What happened?

Go to "My Account," under "Personal Information," and make sure you checked off the box under your e-mail allowing the New England Aquarium to send you e-mails. You can also confirm your sign-up by scrolling through your "Upcoming Opportunities." If you see the Opportunity listed, you are scheduled to volunteer!

What are "Teams"?

Teams are a new feature that we have not yet fully launched. In the future, Teams can be created so that you can volunteer in the Service Corp with a group of friends, family, or colleagues. For now, you can only sign yourself up for projects. If you are interested in volunteering with a large group (eg, a school club or corporate group) e-mail volunteer@neaq.org to learn of potential group opportunities.
