Summary:

The New England Aquarium conducts a two-month field season on the North Atlantic right whales in Canadian waters. We are looking for a highly motivated, independent, and mature individual who has completed a university level degree and is interested in pursuing a career in the field of marine mammalogy. This individual will attend the field research season, assisting the research team in their work on the Right Whale Research Project. A two-month commitment is required. Previous experience in small boats (<50 feet in length) is desirable, as well as experience with digital photography, living in group situations, and basic computer skills.



Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
 

• Extensive day trips into the Bay of Fundy in various weather conditions to collect photographic, genetic, and behavioral data on Right Whales
• Participate in overnight off-shore expeditions to continually track and research Right Whale activity
• Conduct photographic and data analysis in the field office located in Lubec, Maine
• Various tasks required to maintain the equipment and living situation of a field project
• Provides exceptional and engaging customer service in all internal and external interactions
• Additional duties as needed

Qualifications:
 

• Two-month (August and September) commitment is required
• Previous experience in small boats (<50 feet in length) is desirable
• Proactive nature and precise attention to detail
• Experience with digital photography and basic computer skills
• Superior communication skills
• Ability to live harmoniously with 10-15 other researchers
• Housing and food are included; there is no stipend for time or travel
• A valid passport is requiredand the ideal candidate must be able to cross the border between the United States and Canada
• Ability to lift 50 pounds

Department Summary:


The New England Aquarium’s Right Whale Research Project began in 1980 to study one of the world’s most endangered large whale species, the North Atlantic right whale. Fewer than 600 right whales survive in the coastal waters of North America. Vulnerable to vessel strikes and entanglement in fishing gear, about half of all right whale deaths are the result of these human activities. They are also threatened by a low reproductive rate, habitat loss, disease and environmental contaminants. Solutions to reduce human impact on right whales exist, but implementation remains a challenge. We are an integral part of the North Atlantic Right Whale Consortium. The Consortium includes individuals and organizations active in right whale research, conservation and management. Together, we are working to ensure the long-term conservation and recovery of right whales in the North Atlantic.
