Live Foods Culture Intern, Quincy Animal Care Center

Time commitment:

Winter: 125 hours minimum

Spring, Summer, Fall: 12-16 weeks - At least Two/Three Days per week 

Summary: The Culture Aquarist Intern position will assist staff in the Aquarium's mission to Live Blue through sustainability at the New England Aquarium's offsite holding facility in Quincy, MA. In an effort to become more sustainable, the Aquarium is rearing larval fish for exhibit display and culturing a variety of the live foods they need to survive. This intern would mainly be assisting staff in the daily maintenance of live foods cultures. 

Responsibilities: Maintaining cultures of microalgae, copepods, rotifers, brine shrimp, mysid shrimps, and grass shrimp.

Additional responsibilities include maintaining records, researching and implementing new culture techniques and assisting with daily husbandry tasks throughout the facility.

Qualifications:  Strong interest in biology and marine science, previous experience with live foods cultures (algae, copepods, rotifers, brine shrimp etc.) and animals preferred

 

  • This position requires physical labor, must be able to lift 40 lbs and be at least 18 years old
  • Applicant must be able to work independently and as a team
  • Ability to take and carry out multiple instructions in a timely manner

 

This position is not located in Boston and is at our Animal Care Center located along the Fore River in Quincy. Transportation to this facility is easiest by car but one can also reach the facility by public transportation. Public transportation requires taking the Redline to Quincy Center, transferring to bus, and walking about 5 minutes.
