Owl Monitoring Workshop and Field Survey

*Note: This workshop does NOT require an orientation for signups as paperwork and logistics will be covered during the training. Minimum age is 18 years, unless signing up via the teen live blue Ambassador program.*

Background

Belle Isle Marsh is the only salt marsh in Massachusetts located fully within city limits. Its location on Boston Harbor, surrounded by human development, provides unique challenges to the wildlife that lives there. It is almost like an oasis for local birds, mammals, and marine life!

Each winter, snowy, short-eared, and long-eared owls appear in greater abundance to feed and mate. We need volunteer help to track them! This data helps conservationists, state representatives, and local residents better understand our local ecosystems and the species that live there so that we may better protect them.

What to Expect

Bird monitoring projects like this one require some background training, practice, and lots of patience! As such, this Training and Monitoring session will include a classroom portion and a field portion designed to provide plenty of context for birding and related conservation issues. Following the training, participants will take the Blue Line from the Aquarium to Belle Isle Marsh where we will monitor the site for owls and other raptors.

Volunteers should expect to be indoors for an orientation and workshop from 12:30-3:30 and be in the field from 4-5:30, so come prepared for the weather! Some tools will be provided, but bring binoculars if you have them.

Future Projects

Upon completion of this training, you will be given access to a calendar of upcoming monitoring sessions so you can continue to join our monitoring team at Belle Isle Marsh.

This project is part of our new two-year program, "Promoting Education through Action and Conservation of Habitats (PEACH)," which involves a series of workshops and citizen science projects. Keep an eye on the calendar for other workshops, trainings, and recurring conservation events!
