Animal Health Laboratory Volunteer Apply Now One day (8:30 a.m.-2:00 p.m.) per week, starting in September or October and running until February 1. Summary: New England Aquarium’s Quincy Animal Care Facility hosts the organization’s Marine Animal Rescue Team and animal populations currently undergoing holding or quarantine procedures. Animals living under the care of the New England Aquarium rely heavily on analysis work completed by the Animal Health & Environmental Quality teams. These teams analyze environmental elements and blood work daily to ensure the appropriate parameters are met to keep the animals under their care thriving. Volunteers provide support for laboratory staff in all aspects of the program. Responsibilities:
- Assist with the chemical and microbiological analysis of water samples under the supervision of Environmental Quality Technical staff
- Volunteers will be utilizing several techniques to analyze salt and fresh water, including pH meters, spectrophotometers, and titrations
- Assist with processing and analysis of sea turtle blood samples under the supervision of Animal Health staff
- Completing data entry and analysis for blood data into animal records
- Assist Animal Health staff with other medical duties as needed
- Assist in maintaining laboratory supplies and inventory
Qualifications:
- Basic chemistry and/or biology background
- Previous experience in a lab or veterinary environments preferred
- Must have demonstrated ability to learn quickly and be motivated to work independently
- Must be able to lift 50 pounds
- Must be at least 18 years old
This position is not located in Boston and is at our Animal Care Center located along the Fore River in Quincy. Transportation to this facility is easiest by car but one can also reach the facility by public transportation. Public transportation requires taking the Redline to Quincy Center, transferring to bus, and walking about 5 minutes.
