Husbandry Dive Intern, Quincy Animal Care Center

Time commitment:

12-16 weeks - At least Two/Three Days per week 

Summary:

The main focus of the Husbandry Dive Intern is to assist staff in the maintenance of the large holding systems at the Quincy Animal Care Center. These systems are used to hold a variety of animals including sharks, stingrays and teleosts being quarantined or as backup holding for larger animals awaiting exhibit display. All maintenance will be done while SCUBA diving under the NEAq's scientific diver certification program.

Responsibilities

• SCUBA diving in the large tanks for cleaning (scrubbing, vacuuming, etc.)
• Daily care, maintenance, and appearance of the facility, plus a significant amount of cleaning to maintain the quarantine environment
• Daily husbandry tasks:
  • Food prep
  • Tank maintenance (changing bag filters, cleaning protein skimmers, etc.)
  • Surface feedings (no feeding dives)
  • Maintaining records

 Qualifications

• Strong interest in biology and marine science, previous experience with animals preferred
• Must have logged a minimum of 25 open water dives, at least 5 of which must have taken place in the previous 12 month period.
  • These dives are in addition to certification checkout dives
• This position requires physical labor, must be able to lift 40lbs and be at least 18 years old
• Must be able to work independently and as a team

This position is not located in Boston and is at our Animal Care Center located along the Fore River in Quincy. Transportation to this facility is easiest by car but one can also reach the facility by public transportation. Public transportation requires taking the Redline to Quincy Center, transferring to bus, and walking about 5 minutes.
