Internships

Internships at the Aquarium offer college students, recent college graduates and career changers dynamic experiences in areas throughout the Aquarium including veterinary services, animal husbandry, research, conservation, education, museum operations, and more. Interns gain hands on knowledge working alongside dedicated supervisors and mentors who are experts in their fields.

Internship Positions

Internships are available for the winter, spring, summer and fall. Spring, summer and fall internships are 12 weeks long (see individual position descriptions for specific requirements), while winter internships range between 4 and 6 weeks and require a minimum of 125 total hours. Not all positions are available year round, and the time commitment varies slightly depending on the department. Internships are UNPAID and we DO NOT provide housing assistance.

Applying for an Internship

Applications are linked through the position descriptions on the left hand side of this page. The internship application process at the Aquarium involves a formal application submission for each position of interest, up to three internships in a cycle. Well qualified candidates will be invited to an initial interview with the Volunteer Programs and Internships Office. Based on the results of a first round interview, a second interview with the respective department of interest will be scheduled. Before applying, please review the full application requirements and the individual position descriptions to ensure you can fulfill all requirements.

Internship Benefits

Internships are a great way to gain valuable, hands-on work experience and build your resume. You'll have the opportunity to network with marine sciences professionals both inside and outside of the Aquarium, and help work towards the Aquarium's mission. In addition to the opportunity to earn academic credit, there are valuable tangible benefits for interns at the Aquarium.

High School Internships

Internships offered by the Volunteer Programs and Internships Office are designed for applicants who are college-level and beyond, as well as 18+ years of age. Students under age 18 living in Boston and Cambridge can apply to be a paid summer teen intern through our Teen Programs Office. For a full list of all Teen Programs, please click here.
