Exhibit Fabrication: Molding & Casting/Production Intern:

Time commitment: 2-4 full days per week (8:00 am -  5:00 pm) 

New England Aquarium is looking for help creating the artificial habitat for their new Indo-Pacific Reef Community Tank. The primary task will be assisting in producing the realistic plastic coral reproductions for the exhibit. Interns will work both collaboratively with the design team staff and independently once trained to produce silicone molds of corals, casting corals, and  final installation in the Aquarium exhibit space. The regular workspace will be at the NEAQ exhibit workshop studio in Charlestown. 

 

Duties:

-Work with design team staff to produce molds of corals

-Help create plastic reproductions

-Maintain safe & organized workspaces

-Be able to work independently on tasks

-Assist with other various project tasks when necessary

 

Requirements:

-Demonstrate understanding/experience producing rubber molds, specifically pour molds, brush-on, multi-part molds, mother mold/jacket production.

Transferrable skills include -Sculpture, ID, Foundry, Casting, Moldmaking, working with plastics, working with building/construction materials, Ceramics, Jewelry Casting, Glass

-Demonstrate understanding/experience with casting various materials, including but not limited to plastics, resins, etc

-Able to interpret reference materials to produce life like corals

-Excellent communication skills, collaborative approach to tasking, and flexibility required

-Adhere to safety protocols and employees guidelines in workshop and with power tools

-Able to lift and carry 50 lbs

-Able to reliably transport oneself to the Charlestown facility

-Preferred but not required: experience with fiberglass &/or carpentry
