Intertidal Surveys on the Harbor Islands

Boston Harbor Islands National & State Park is working on a project to collect baseline data on intertidal communities in areas that may be affected by future shoreline protection projects in Boston Harbor, and we're looking for volunteers interested in helping out with this project. Surveys entail working in small groups to identify organisms and classify sediment along transects from the seawall to the shoreline, often traversing both rocky areas with boulders and cobble beaches (such as in the site shown below). Participants must wear hiking boots or rubber boots; crampons will be provided to aid in navigating slippery rocks. No prior experience is necessary, and volunteers will be taught to complete all tasks, including identifying key species.

Help is needed on the following dates:
August 12-13 - Lovells (camping overnight): Depart Boston 10 am Aug 12, return by 2 pm August 13. This trip involves an afternoon/evening survey on August 12 and an early morning (5 am) survey on August 13. Note that the perseid meteor shower will peak during this trip, so join us for an evening of star gazing between surveys!
August 14 - Lovells: Depart U Mass Boston (UMB) 4:45 am, return by 11:30 am
August 15 - Georges: Depart UMB 6 am, return by 12:30 pm
August 16 - Gallops: Depart UMB 6:30 am, return by 1 pm

Note that this project is led by National Park Service Staff, so you will be responsible for communicating with them directly. Contact Margot Buchbinder (mvbuchbinder@gmail.com) for any questions.
