Opportunity Details

Data Collector for Timing & Tracking Evaluation

Are you detail oriented? Do you like people watching? Would you like to help NEAq improve future programming and exhibits?

Well this is the position for you! In April, we launched our new exhibit, the Science of Sharks. This is the first time the exhibit team created a cohesive learning experience by combining live animals, technology, tactiles, and informational panels. The Visitor Education evaluation team would like to better understand how our visitors interacting with the different elements (tactile, technology, and live animal tanks) of the Science of Sharks exhibit. We are looking for volunteers to help us collect data using timing and tracking evaluation. Volunteers will work in pairs to track how long visitors spend at each exhibit element and what types of interactions are happening throughout the exhibit space. We will then use the data you collect to help us improve exhibit design and educational offerings in future exhibit spaces here at the New England Aquarium!

Volunteers will check in at the Information Desk and be met by someone from the Visitor Education team. Volunteers will be given a brief orientation and then head to the Lower Level of the West Wing to the Science of Sharks exhibit armed with an iPad and stop watch to observe visitors and record interactions. You will work in a two-person team to ensure accuracy and allow for easier data collection. Volunteers can expect to spend at least 3 hours in the Science of Sharks exhibit timing and tracking visitors, with room to take breaks.

The volunteer will not actively interact with the visitors—this is an observation only evaluation. While you will be mostly incognito, you will be given a name tag so you can be identified as a volunteer.
