Creative Reuse! Upcycle Tshirts in the Aquarium
With the holidays around the corner, we are working hard here at the Aquarium to educate the public about sustainable gift options. Shopping during this time of year usually means purchasing lots of goods to fill lots of plastic bags. Those bags can eventually end up in the ocean, where hungry sea turtles may mistake them for a delicious jellyfish. One solution to this issue is to use reusable bags while shopping.For this project, we will be showing Aquarium visitors how to "upcycle" t-shirts into reusable shopping bags! We have a stockpile of Aquarium t-shirts to give out to visitors, but we need your help to educate and engage the public. Volunteers are needed for a few different roles: - Cut t-shirts into the proper shape and form - Practice creating bags behind the scenes - Setup and staff an educational table on the impacts of plastic on marine life - Help visitors turn pre-cut t-shirts into bags for them to take home
The first hour will be spent behind the scenes for a brief overview on visitor education and prepping shirts. Volunteers will then spend the next couple of hours in the Aquarium's main building continuing to cut shirts and engaging visitors who wish to participate.
