Shorebird Monitoring Session at Revere Beach

Revere Beach is a popular destination for locals and tourists alike. But we must share this area with nonhuman residents as well! Shorebirds, such as the state-threatened piping plover, rely on sandy shores for nesting grounds. Every spring, volunteers install symbolic fencing to prevent people and pets from disturbing nests. This year, we need volunteers to help with an ongoing monitoring effort.

As a shorebird monitor volunteer, you will work closely with Mass Audubon and the conservation biologists of the Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR). You will take on the crucial role in the protection of coastal nesting birds and the fragile ecosystems they inhabit in the urban areas of Revere, Winthrop and Nahant. While ensuring the protection of the birds, you will also serve as beach stewards to promote community awareness of coastal conservation.
To get involved with this event, we ask that you attend a one-hour orientation on June 14th, 6-7pm.
Attending this orientation will better prepare you for future monitoring days. Attending the orientation will allow you to signup for monitoring shifts before the rest of the Service Corps.

If you cannot attend an orientation but would still like to help, limited positions will be available for you to learn "on-the-job." The Service Corps will be taking part in shorebird monitoring on the following days (morning and afternoon shifts available):

- Saturday, June 17th

- Sunday, June 18th

- Wednesday, June 28th

- Saturday, July 15th

- Sunday, July 16th

- Wednesday, July 26th

Questions, comments, or concerns? Need help getting to the site, or have questions on what to expect? Please email the Service Leader for the specific dates (see below) or Melanie at mgarate@massaudubon.org.
